Arashiyama Temple Gardens, Bamboo Groves, Golden Pavilion

Arashiyama/Sagano was a beautiful little town in western Kyoto that we just had to visit. It's famous for the bamboo groves and Tenryuji temple and its gardens. It's a world heritage site.
Tenryuji was built in 1339 by the ruling shogun Ashikaga Takauji. Takauji dedicated the temple to Emperor Go-Daigo, who had just passed away. The two important historic figures used to be allies until Takauji turned against the emperor in a struggle for supremacy over Japan. By building the temple, Takauji intended to appease the former emperor's spirits.
The gardens were very pretty. Lots of photos!
We also visited the Golden Pavilion which is so strange. It's so odd walking through gardens and with your view obscured then into a clearing with a still lake and a large golden temple in the middle of it. It's like a beacon with it's reflection in the water. Phone was flat at this point. Erin was grabbed by some ladies and had their photo taken with her. Was funny :p
